Pub History

Pub names and pub signs have their own fascinating stories behind them. In the middle ages, when much of the population was illiterate, pictorial pub signs were an essential way of advertising. Pubs were often named after local traditions or landmarks, services or entertainment provided within, historical figures etc., and many signs used illustrations in lieu of words to accommodate their clientele.
